Foreign Office rejects CNN story, says "no such understanding in place"
Pakistan's Foreign Office on Saturday issued a statement on a CNN report which said US was close to finalizing a deal which would allow it use of Pakistan's airspace for operations in Afghanistan.
In a statement on Saturday, it said "no such understanding" between the two countries.
CNN, in its story, cited three "sources familiar with the details of a classified briefing" given by the Biden administration to US lawmakers about the use of Pakistan's airspace for operations in Afghanistan.
Pakistan wanted to sign an MOU in exchange for assistance in fighting its own terrorism issues CNN claimed, adding that terms of this agreement were still not finalized.
While social media erupted with scorn about the PTI government's U-Turn on this issue, after Prime Minister Imran Khan said he would not allow use of its airspace, the Foreign Office said no such agreement was in place.
The spokesperson, however, stressed that Pakistan and the US had "longstanding cooperation" on issues of regional security and counter-terrorism and "the two sides remain engaged in regular consultations".
