Chances of heavy rain, urban flooding decrease in Karachi

In the fifth alert issued by the Pakistan Meteorological department, the deep depression over northeast Arabian Sea has intensified into a Cyclonic Storm 'Shaheen'.

The chances of torrential rains in Karachi and other parts of Sindh will disappear by tomorrow and the possibility of urban flooding has also gone down, reported Geo.

However, scattered rain-wind/thunderstorm is expected in Karachi, Hyderabad, Thatta, Badin, Dadu and Jamshoro, Thaparker, Umerkot, Mirpurkhas, Sanghar, Tando Muhammad Khan (TMK), Tando Allayar (TAY), Shaheed Benazirabad, Nosheroferoz, Sukkur, Larkana, Jacobabad, Shikarpur districts till Saturday, according to the Met department alert.

Meanwhile, heavy rainfall with thunderstorms are predicted in Gwadar, Lasbela, Awaran, Kech, Khuzdar, Kalat and Panjgur districts of Balochistan till Sunday night.

Heavy rains may generate urban flooding in Lasbela, Ormara, Pasni, Gwadar, Turbat and Jiwani, read the alert.

It said, the system lies centred near latitude 23.2N and longitude 66.5E, at a distance of about 280 km southwest of Karachi, 230km from Ormara and 470km southeast of Gawadar.

It further stated that estimated maximum sustained surface wind is 65- 85km/hr and sea condition is rough/very rough around the system centre and it is likely to move west-southwestwards towards Oman/Makran coast.

Earlier, Tornado Shaheen was expected in the Arabian Sea by 1pm Friday with chances of moderate to heavy rainfall in Karachi, while thunderstorm was expected in Balochistan.

The speed of wind from 50 to 60 km/hr was predicted with rainfall as the depression in the sea would be turned into deep depression.

It was said the deep depression which was moving towards south-west would make its way from Gwadar to Oman.

Meanwhile, the Pakistan Metereological Department predicted further heavy rainfall accompanied with winds in Karachi, Hyderabad, Thatta, Badin, Dadu and Jamshoro districts from today (Friday) till Saturday night.

According to a fourth alert related to Cyclone Gulab issued by the Met department on Friday, the depression over northeast Arabian Sea moved west-northwestward at a speed of 15km/hr during last 12 hours, and now lies centred at a distance of about 160 km south-southwest of Karachi, 140km from Thatta and 270km from Ormara.

"Estimated maximum sustained surface wind is 30 - 40Kts and sea condition is rough or very rough around the system centre," it said, adding the system is likely to strengthen further into a Cyclonic Storm during next 6 hours and move west-northwestwards towards Makran coast

The alert further predicted "scattered heavy/very heavy falls, extremely heavy" in Gwadar, Lasbela, Awaran, Kech, Khuzdar, Kalat and Panjgur districts of Balochistan till Sunday night.

It also predicted rain with thunderstorm in other parts of Sindh, including Thaparker, Umerkot, Mirpurkhas, Sanghar, Tando Muhammad Khan (TMK), Tando Allayar (TAY), Shaheed Benazirabad, Nosheroferoz, Sukkur, Larkana, Jacobabad, Shikarpur and Ghotki districts till Saturday.

Possible impacts

The alert added the following possible impacts of the weather:

The sea conditions would remain rough/very rough with high surge at times till Sunday.

Fishermen are advised not to venture in the sea from till October 3.

Torrential rains may generate urban flooding in Karachi, Badin, Thatta, Hyderabad, Dadu, Mirpurkhas, Shaeed Benazirabad, Lasbela, Sonmiani, Ormara, Pasni, Gwadar, Turbat and Jiwani.

Windstorm may cause damages to vulnerable structures.
