Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz leader Muhammad Zubair has responded to a leaked video on Sunday, which purportedly features him, as a "new low in politics."

"Whoever is behind this [video] has done an extremely poor & shameful act," he tweeted on Sunday night.

He added in the tweet that he had served the country with honesty, integrity and commitment. "I will continue raising my voice for betterment of Pakistan," Zubair said.

The video which allegedly showed the PML-N leader in a bedroom with an unidentified woman engaged in sexual activities became a top trend on social media with the hashtag of #ZubairUmar.

Zubair is the spokesperson of PML-N supremo Nawaz Sharif and party's Vice President, a post he shares with Maryam Nawaz. He is also the brother of Asad Umar who is a minister in Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf led federal government.

The leak has been the subject of intense debate on social media with questions of its authenticity and how it was leaked.

Prominent journalist Gharidah Farooqi raised multiple questions about the video in her tweet, saying it's important to distinguish whether it's a private video in which both parties are consenting adults. She also says the person who is alleged to be in the video has the right to pursue legal options.

Multiple memes on the video also emerged on Twitter.

Posting a picture of a calendar featuring viral videos each month, a user said: "And finally "The Calendar" has been updated."

Another user posted a video clip of an Indian movie explaining the situation between Asad and Zubair.

Leaked videos on social media are not a new phenomena in Pakistan.

Cleric Mufti Qavi has been the subject of many several scandals involving himself and women, from Qandeel Baloch to, more recently in June, images of himself in compromising positions.

National Accountability Bureau Chairman Javed Iqbal faced a scandal in 2019 when a local TV channel aired the audio and video clips of his alleged sexual conversation and interaction with a lady.

The woman said she faced a NAB case when she refused following instructions of the chairman.

However, the NAB chairperson refuted the claim, saying the video was a conspiracy against the anti-corruption watchdog chief. Later the news channel also apologized Iqbal for airing the content.
