The Supreme Court on Thursday ruled that a woman's inheritance could only be claimed in her lifetime and her children could not lay a claim after her death, reported Dawn.

The apex court, under the supervision of Justice Umar Ata Bandial, issued the ruling in a case wherein the children of two deceased women claimed a share in their maternal grandfather's property.

The property belonged to Isa Khan whose grand children were residents of Peshawar.

According to the report, in 1935 Isa Khan transferred his property to his son, Abdul Rehman, without giving a share to either of his two daughters.

Isa's daughters didn't challenge the move in their lifetime to claim their right to their father's property.

Khan's grandchildren, however, filed a case in 2004 to claim their share in the property.

While a civil court had ruled in their favour at the time, the high court later nullified the judgement.

At the hearing in Islamabad on Thursday, the SC upheld the high court's decision, with Justice Bandial observing that the law provided protection to women's inheritance rights.
