Nobel laureate and education rights activist Malala Yousufzai made a plea to the Pakistani government urging them to welcome Afghan refugee in an interview to Geo on Thursday night.

Malala was speaking to Shahzeb Khanzada on his prime time show when she asked the government to provide education to Afghan refugee children, as it has done in the past.

She also asked that the terrible situation in Afghanistan was "a matter of humanity and cannot be ignored".

"These people have nothing to do with the war, so we must support them," she told Khanzada.

She also said it was important to remember that they had lost their homes, their loved ones and many of the children won't understand why the events are taking place.

While she said there was time to study why things unfolded the way they did in Afghanistan, it was important to "focus on an urgent solution, to get people to safety."

As a education activist, Malala also spoke about Afghan refugee children needing education.

She showed her appreciation for Pakistan's efforts so far and asked they continue to help Afghan refugees, saying that while every country had their own interests, it was important to support the common person.

Pakistan has said it cannot afford to host more refugees.

Malala's interview was well received on social media with people showing their admiration for her stance.

Malala is a polarizing force in Pakistan and often the subject of hatred and the response to this interview was no exception.
