At least 50 lawmakers from the treasury and opposition have been invited to army head quarters on Monday to attend a security briefing on Afghanistan, according to a report in Dawn.

The group will be briefed director general military operations.

"Besides Afghanistan, the parliamentarians will also get a briefing from the military high-ups on the situation in Indian Occupied Jammu and Kashmir," the report stated.

Dawn was citing sources when it wrote that t"he parliamentarians were expected to spend five to six hours in the GHQ during which they would have a two-hour “interactive session” with Chief of Army Staff Gen Qamar Javed Bajwa."

But the meeting has already sparked controversy with lawmakers taking to Twitter to ask the selection of the lawmakers for this meeting.

PPP Senator Raza Rabbani has reportedly questioned why the meeting is taking place at GHQ and not Parliament.

Last month, military personnel briefed parliamentarians on July 1 in Parliament and discussed a host of issues related to security.

This time, according to Dawn who was citing a parliamentarian who has been invited to the meeting, the GHQ will be briefing members of three parliamentary committees -- on Kashmir and the National Assembly and Senate standing committees on defence.

According to ARY News "the briefing was scheduled at the request of the parliamentary bodies that wanted to get an insight into the matters in the wake of the ongoing Afghanistan situation."

Social media users also took to Twitter to criticise the decision to hold the meeting at GHQ.
