Pakistan’s UN Ambassador Munir Akram has said they will monitor India to ensure it does not use its new position as presidency of the UNSC to promote its own narrative.

He was referring to India's new role from Monday as president of the United Nations Security Council, a role it is assuming for the first time in its tenure as a non-permanent member of the international organization.

“India will obviously use [this position] to promote its own narrative on various issues, including terrorism and UN reform,” Ambassador Akram told Dawn on Sunday, adding that he will monitor them to ensure no moves are made against Pakistan's "core interests."

He also said Pakistan was not too concerned about India's new role.

India took over the role from France on Sunday according to the UNSC's system of rotation in accordance to alphabetical order.

India is organizing three high-level meetings on maritime security, counter-terrorism and promotion of multilateralism.

India's prime minister Narendra Modi will address the UNSC on August 9 and will also preside over a UNSC meeting.
