Pakistan requests Afghan govt to review its decision of calling back ambassador: FM Qureshi

ISLAMABAD: Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi said that the incident happened with the daughter of Afghan ambassador is being investigated to find out the culprits.

He was addressing a news conference in Islamabad this evening along with National Security Advisor Dr Moeed Yusuf and the Inspector General Islamabad Qazi Jamil ur Rehman.

The Foreign Minister said he telephoned his Afghan counterpart Mohammad Haneef Atmar today (Monday) and informed him about the actions taken so far by the law enforcement agencies in connection with this incident.

He assured him that Pakistan is taking every possible step to find the culprits involved in this incident.

The Foreign Minister said Pakistan has requested Afghan government to reconsider its decision in recalling its Ambassador and senior diplomatic staff from Islamabad in larger interest of peace process.

He said full cooperation will be accorded to the Afghan Investigation team.

He said the security of the Afghan embassy and consulate in Pakistan has been beefed up.

Speaking on the occasion, IG Islamabad said that Islamabad Police is taking bold steps to probe the case and to identify the culprits. He said five different inquiry committees of Islamabad Police have been constituted in this regard. He said seven hours of 300 recordings of CCTV footages have been reviewed in addition to interviewing 220 persons.

In his remarks, National Security Advisor Dr Moeed Yusuf said that some Indian elements are trying to destabilize relations between Pakistan and Afghanistan as EU Disinfo Lab has exposed Indian propaganda against Pakistan in the past.

He said Indian verified social media accounts shared old pictures of a girl as daughter of Afghan Ambassador for malicious propaganda against Pakistan. He said Pakistan is facing hybrid war.

He said Pakistan needs cooperation from Afghan side for logical conclusion of this case.

Earlier on Monday, in telephonic conversation, Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi assured his Afghan counterpart of taking all possible steps to arrest the culprits involved in the incident regarding the daughter of Afghan ambassador.

Qureshi briefed him about the steps taken so far by the law enforcement agencies following the July 16 incident and vowed to bring the culprits to justice.

He said the Ministry of Foreign Affairs was cognizant of the diplomatic norms and mentioned that the security at Afghan embassy and consulate in Pakistan had been beefed up.

Foreign Minister Atmar thanked Prime Minister Imran Khan for taking a personal interest in the investigation into the incident, the Foreign Office said.

He also appreciated the efforts of Foreign Minister Qureshi to increase the security at the Afghan embassy and consulate.

Hanif Atmar said Afghanistan attached special importance to bilateral relations with Pakistan and was committed to its peace and stability.

The two foreign ministers agreed to continue collaboration on issues of mutual interest, the FO said.
