ISLAMABAD: Prime minister Imran Khan has said that Pakistan will seal its border with Afghanistan if Taliban try to take over Afghanistan by force.

Prime minister was speaking in an interview with New York Times via video link.

"Pakistan will seal the border because now Pakistan's border has been fenced, and secondly, we do not want another influx of refugees," Imran Khan was quoted as saying.

"Pakistan after 9/11 opted to join the U.S. war on terror and it cost Pakistan a lot in human lives. 70,000 Pakistanis died, and over $150 billion were lost to the economy because there were suicide bombings and bombs going on all over the country," PM said.

Imran Khan said that suicide attacks increased the problems in Pakistan. The U.S. kept expecting more from Pakistan and Pakistan tried to deliver what they were not capable of. So there was this mistrust between the two countries.

Pakistan thought that it had paid a heavy price while the United States felt that Pakistan had not taken the required steps. "So in that sense, it was a lopsided relationship," he added.

The prime minister said that Pakistan desires an evenhanded relationship with United States as it was between the U.S. and Britain, "or actually between U.S. and India right now."

The Prime Minister made it clear that he wanted a relationship based on trust and common interests in the future, adding that Pakistan and the United States have common interests in Afghanistan.
