PM to take vote of confidence from NA today
Prime Minister Imran Khan will take a vote of confidence from the National Assembly (NA) today (Saturday) after the Senate polls debacle on March 3rd.
The premier had decided to take a vote of confidence following PTI's Hafeez Sheikh's defeat in Senate polls. Hafeez was up against Pakistan Democratic Movement's (PDM) joint candidate Syed Yusuf Raza Gillani and lost by 6 votes despite a clear majority of PTI and the allies in the lower house.
In his address to the nation on Thursday, the prime minister said he will take a vote of confidence from the NA on Saturday in an open ballot, which should be the standard practice. He said he is not afraid of losing power as he has no monetary interests. He said he bears all his personal expenses himself and is not A burden on the national exchequer like previous rulers.
He said that the country's leadership comes from within the members of parliament "and here you have people becoming Senators after bribing others".
The premier was referring to a video of Ali Haider Gillani, son of Yusuf Raza Gillani, that surfaced on the media a day before the Senate polls in which he was allegedly offering money to PTI lawmakers to vote for the former premier.
Imran Khan called a meeting of PTI's parliamentary party and its allies in the Prime Minister House on Friday to review the political situation and Senate elections. All PTI members and allies, including MQM and PML-Q, expressed full confidence in Khan.
The premier, while addressing the gathering, said that he knows 16 members of ruling Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) sold their conscience and urged the party members to vote according to their conscience as selling vote for money is dishonesty.
Opposition to boycott the NA session:
Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM) head and Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (JUI-F) chief Fazlur Rehman on Friday announced that PDM will not attend tomorrow’s National Assembly session.
Talking to media in Sukkur, Fazlur Rehman said that with the absence of opposition parties, Saturday’s session would have no political significance. No opposition member will attend the National Assembly session tomorrow. Imran Khan has lost the confidence of the majority, even the President has said so.
