US: Over 8 million people have contracted coronavirus
Novel coronavirus infection is still rampant in the United States and there are no signs of the situation getting better anytime soon.
As of today, the number of Covid cases in the US has surpassed 8 million and almost 218,000 people have succumbed to the viral disease. Recently, a spike in new cases is seen in almost every state of the country prompting fears of a third surge in the land of opportunities.
The first case of COVID-19 in the US was reported 267 days ago on 22nd January. Soon after, in just a few weeks the US became the global epicenter of the viral disease. It has been leading the world in reported Coronavirus cases and fatalities for several months now.
The most worrying fact is that even after almost nine months the virus is still wreaking havoc in the United States. New hospitalizations and deaths in the country are still trending upwards. At least 17 states in the country have seen new cases' surge higher than any other point during the pandemic. Nine states among the 17 seeing dramatic rise are in the Midwest, with six in the western US.
Another alarming fact is that new weekly cases haven't dipped below 250,000 since June. With Presidential elections just around the corner, and President Trump holding election rallies disregarding the Covid SOPs there is a genuine fear of a spike in the new cases among the general public.
