Coronavirus still rampant in India, cases top 5 million mark

Novel coronavirus situation is getting out of control in India as over 5 million viral cases have been reported so far.

Novel coronavirus situation is uncontrollable in India as over 5 million viral cases have been reported so far.

The country of over 1.3 billion people is approaching the ninth month of the COVID-19 pandemic and things are getting worse every day. India is behind only the US in terms of number of coronavirus cases. With over 83,000 confirmed COVID-deaths, it's number third in terms of fatalities due to the viral disease behind only the US and Brazil.

According to the Worldometer, these are the latest coronavirus statistics of India:

  • Total Cases : 5,115,893
  • New Cases : +97,859
  • Total Deaths : 83,230
  • New Deaths : +1,139
  • Total Recovered : 4,022,049
  • Active Cases : 1,010,614
  • Critical Cases : 8,944

The most alarming fact is that recently a serious spike is seen in new cases. In the past week, India has recorded more than 90,000 new cases and 1,000 new deaths every day. This is mostly due to the fact that most states have lifted lockdown restrictions to revive the battered economy. The government of India has adapted the policy of '' learning to live with the virus'', as the economic situation of the country can't afford country-wide lockdown anymore.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his administration have mishandled and underestimated the whole COVID situation gravely. The worrying news is that there is no sign of things getting better anytime soon. In fact, most health experts believe that the real number of infections in India is much higher. It seems that India's road to recovery will be a long one.
