Lyari building collapse death toll rises to 22
KARACHI: Two more bodies were found beneath the debris of a collapsed building in Karachi’s Lyari early Wednesday, taking the death toll from the incident to 22.
The dead bodies have been shifted to Civil Hospital, Karachi. The identity of the deceased is not yet known. Rescue teams and a heavy contingent of police continue rescue and relief operations.
A five-storey residential building located in Lyari area of Karachi collapsed on Sunday night. Eyewitnesses said that the building tilted to one side before collapsing. The rescue teams initially rescued 11 injured and one dead body from the rubble.
A contingent of civil engineers from the Pakistan army also took part in the rescue operations. Sniffer dogs were also used to try to locate those trapped under the debris.
The building was declared "dangerous and unstable" by the Sindh Building Control Authority more than two months ago and had more than 40 apartments. While most of the families have already vacated the building, some were still inside the building when it collapsed.—NNI
