Here is why commercial planes are white?

WEB DESK: While traveling one hardly ever give a thought on why these commercial plans are mostly white? There must be a reason - probably an authentic one behind it.

Moreover, to find out scientific rationale (if any) linked to the colour choice Business Insider took a step and John Hansman, a Professor of Aeronautics and Astronauctics at MIT helped them in this regard.

He says,"The main reason why aircraft are painted white or light colors is to reflect sunlight and minimize both the heating and potential damage from solar radiation," adding,"It’s basically the same as putting sun block on."

Furthermore, the white colour enable airlines to keep cooling costs within limit. Plus, it serves a purpose which is to protect specific parts of plane that are prone to early damage than other parts. Hansman here explained,"the nosecone of the plane in particular needs the extra temperature advantage, because it’s made of composite material (usually plastic). This section can’t be made out of metal like the fuselage because it houses the plane’s radar and needs to be transparent so the device can operate effectively."

Also, according to findings of a study, published in 2011,"a whiter fuselage would stand out more against the sky from the perspective of the avian visual system."

It worth adding here that approximately $600 million dollars worth of damage birds caused to planes each year, as reported by NY Daily News.
