India agrees to supply 500 MW electricity to Pakistan

New Delhi: India has agreed to export 500 MW electricity to Pakistan. Four groups have been formed to finalise technical, commercial, tariff and implementation issues, Aaj News reported on Monday.

According to the reports, Islamabad and New Delhi hold two day technical talks in New Delhi on March 5 on electricity trade with focus on assessing availability of electricity in India for import and on identifying the points of transmission line.

Pakistan is facing severe energy shortages and had sought as much as 500MW electricity from India through a transmission line from Indian Punjab to Lahore. The incumbent government is very keen on importing power from the neighbouring country. Initially, 500MW power would be imported from India and the quantum would be expanded later on.

It is pertinent to know that energy-starved Pakistan had already looked west, to Iran, for gas necessary to generate much needed power for the country’s industries and consumers.
