Contempt case: SC to indict Malik Riaz’s on next hearing

ISLAMABAD: The Supreme court likely to decide wether or not to convict Malik Riaz by July 13 (tomorrow) in the contempt of Court case against him, Reported Aaj news.

During the hearing of  the Contempt of court Case against property tycoon Malik Riaz, his counsel Dr Basit argued before the court that the case of his client should be further processed according to the new contempt of court law.

"We accepted the court notice, since there was no law of contempt at that time but now a new law has formed and the proceedings should now be according to the law. As per the new law the contempt notice is no longer valid", he said.

He further added that, Malik Riaz has the right to appeal according to the Ordinance 2013 and act 2012.

A three-member bench of the apex court comprising Justice Mian Shakirullah Jan, Justice Ejaz Afzal and Justice Athar Saeed was hearing the case.

Upon which Justice Shakir ullah Jan remarked that, the court will decide tomorrow as to convict him (Malik Riaz) or not, subsequently the hearing was adjourned till July 13 (tomorrow).

During the previous hearing on July 5, former President of the Islamabad High Court, Ashraf Gujar, who is the petitioner in the instant case, contended that delaying tactics have been adopted by the counsel for Malik Riaz while seeking adjournment in the case.

Despite of court directions, Dr Basit, counsel for Malik Riaz, did not turn up before the court. Advocate-on Record Raja Abdul Ghafoor appeared before the court and sought adjournment on behalf of Dr Basit. He said that Dr Basit could not appear before the court due to his heart ailment.

Mushtaq Mughal, another petitioner, while arguing before the court, contended that Malik Riaz had made both judicial and criminal contempt of court at which the court has the jurisdiction to take suo moto notice of it.Later, after hearing to the petitioner arguments, the court adjourned the hearing till July 12.
