Massive fire collapses garments factory in Karachi’s Export Processing Zone
A massive fire tore through a garments factory in Karachi’s Landhi Export Processing Zone on Thursday, engulfing the entire building and causing it to collapse.
Two firefighters were injured during the operation as they worked to control the rapidly spreading flames.
The fire has been upgraded to a third-degree alert, as firefighting teams continue to battle the blaze.
Chief Fire Officer Humayun Khan told the media that the fire, reported around 3:30 pm, is proving difficult to control due to the large quantity of fabric stored in the factory.
Emergency measures have been enforced on nearby hydrants to support firefighting efforts.
A total of twenty fire tenders, including twelve KMC units, one snorkel, and two water bowsers, are deployed at the scene.
Rescue 1122 and firefighting teams from neighbouring factories have also joined the operation.
Dense smoke and structural hazards continue to complicate operations, and authorities say it will take more time before the fire is fully contained.
Officials said the cause of the fire could not be determined immediately.
Fire safety arrangements at the company are not yet clear, according to the chief fire officer.
Residents and workers in nearby areas have been moved to safety due to heavy smoke.
