Arsalan Iftikhar corruption case; CJ steps down from bench

A three-member bench of the Supreme Court resumed the hearing of a graft case against Arsalan Iftikhar. Aaj News reported.

The bench was headed by father of the accused Chief Justice Iftikhar Mohammad Chaudry.

During the case proceedings, CJ Iftikhar Chaudry, decided to step down from the bench hearing his son's case.

Earlier, Attorney General Irfan Qadir said to the chief justice that he cannot be part of the bench as he is getting emotional for his son but CJ replied that he knows the judicial code of conduct and refused to leave the bench.

A sou motu notice was issued over allegations of corruption against the son of CJ Iftikhar Chaudry, who is accussed of accepting corrupt payments up to Rs 40 crore (PKR 400 million) from a real estate tycoon and owner of Bahria Town.

Yesterday, the Chief Justice of Pakistan said that if found guilty, his son will be dealt with strictly and will be punished according to the law. He also said that anyone trying to manipulate the law to create a conspiracy to stain his name will not be spared.

The case proceedings are underway.
