SC bench seeks details about prisoners' cases

A two-member bench of the Supreme Court headed by Chief Justice of Pakistan Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry on Tuesday sought details about the prisoners lodged in jails across the Punjab province whose challans had not been presented to the courts.

The bench also summoned Inspector General of Police Punjab and Inspector General of Prisons Punjab for February 22.

The bench passed the order while hearing a bail application of Ali Nawaz, involved in killing his wife advocate Shabnum Faryal, at Supreme Court Lahore Registry.

Earlier, the bench was informed that challan in the case had not been presented to the court for the last eight months.

The bench took a strict note of the situation and summoned Inspector General Punjab Police, DIG Investigation and SSP Investigation who appeared shortly after being summoned.

The CJP reprimanded the police officers on failure to submit challans in time and questioned as to what was happening in the department.

The CJP referring to DIG investigation remarked that he would know what happened if he (DIG) was immediately sent to jail.

IGP Haji Habibur Rahman explained that he took the charge only three days back and was reviewing the whole situation. He assured the court that flaws would be removed.

However, the bench adjourning the matter till February 22 sought details of the cases of prisoners whose challans had not been presented to the courts.
