‘Transformers’ sequel is biggest weekend grosser so far
‘Transformers: Dark of the Moon’ has become the biggest weekend opening grosser so far in the domestic market, with 97.4 million dollars.
Its distributor Paramount Pictures revealed that the sequel beat the 90.2 million dollars debut of Disney’s ‘Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides’.
However, the domestic gross for the sci-fi sequel was down from the 109 million dollars first weekend for ‘Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen’ in 2009, reports Fox News.
Since its opening on Tuesday night, the new ‘Transformers’ has garnered 162 million dollars domestically, a drop from 200.1 million dollars for ‘Revenge of the Fallen’ in its first five days.
‘Dark of the Moon’ has also added 210 million dollars overseas, giving the movie a worldwide total of 372 million dollars through Sunday.
The movie broke the three-day ‘fourth of July weekend’ record for domestic revenue previously held by ‘Spider-Man 2’ at 88.2 million dollars in 2004.
But factoring in today’s higher admission prices, ‘Spider-Man 2’ sold more tickets than ‘Dark of the Moon’.
