NATO calls on EU to do more in Afghanistan

NATO calls on EU to do more in AfghanistanNATO Secretary General Jaap de Hoop Scheffer on Friday called on the European Union to get more involved to help find a solution to the current problems in Afghanistan.
"I think that Afghanistan could have a higher priority on the European Union agenda," De Hoop Scheffer told reporters in Copenhagen following a meeting with Danish Prime Minister Anders Fogh Rasmussen.
"The EU could do a lot, and perhaps more as far as police training in Afghanistan is concerned," he added.
The NATO chief said that he, like the Danish prime minister, was "very much in favour" of strengthening NATO-EU ties.
He also underlined that "the answer in Afghanistan is not a military one" and said it was "very important that the relationship between the military and the civilians is put on a stronger footing".
De Hoop Scheffer was visiting Denmark to prepare a summit to be held in Riga November 28-29, where the issue of Afghanistan is to be on the agenda.
Denmark has some 400 soldiers deployed in the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) in Afghanistan.
