A round-the-clock curfew imposed on Baghdad and two other provinces was lifted from 4:00 p.m. (1300 GMT) on Monday after nearly two days of a complete ban on pedestrians and vehicles, an interior ministry official told AFP.
He said the ban on pedestrian movement was lifted from 4:00 p.m. on Monday, while the vehicle ban would be lifted from 6:00 am (0300 GMT) on Tuesday.
The curfew was imposed on Baghdad, Diyala and Salaheddin provinces.
However, the daily dusk-to-dawn curfew in the capital from 9:00 p.m. (1800 GMT) will remain in effect.
It was not clear whether Baghdad airport would be reopened after it was closed for two days as part of the security measure.
Earlier the state television Al-Iraqiya had reported that the curfew was lifted.
Life had come to a virtual halt in Baghdad with no sign of a pedestrian or a vehicle on the city's streets after the round-the-clock curfew was imposed to thwart any attack during the verdict against Saddam Hussein.
Anticipating a surge in violence, the Iraqi government had imposed an indefinite curfew since 6:00 am (0300 GMT) on Sunday. Since Friday authorities had also cancelled all military leave and put the country's armed forces on alert.
