Continuous heavy rainfall has caused widespread damage in parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, leaving at least two people dead and several injured, as infrastructure and daily life were severely disrupted.

In Haripur, three days of persistent rain led to roof collapses, uprooted trees, and flooding in low-lying areas.

In Tehsil Khanpur, multiple homes were damaged, while one person was killed after a wall collapsed in an Afghan refugee camp. Another fatality occurred when a falling tree struck a resident, leaving four others injured.

Flooded streets resembled ponds, while landslides blocked key roads. Water inflows into the Tarbela Dam have also increased due to continuous rainfall.

In Kurram District, heavy rains disrupted daily life, injuring at least 15 people in separate incidents, including house collapses. Floodwaters swept away link roads, and a key bridge on the route connecting Peshawar to Parachinar partially collapsed, suspending traffic.

Local authorities said restoration work has begun, but is being hampered by strong water flows. Officials added that full rehabilitation would begin once water levels receded.

A powerful westerly weather system is set to grip Pakistan next week, bringing widespread rain to Karachi, Lahore, and several other regions, according to the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD).

The PMD has issued a weather advisory forecasting a significant wet spell and heavy snowfall across most parts of the country starting in the mid of next week, as a powerful westerly wave is expected to grip the region.

According to the Met Office, a shallow westerly wave will initially approach the upper regions on January 16 (tomorrow), persisting until January 19. The system is predicted to strengthen significantly by January 20, eventually encompassing most of the country by January 21.

The weather system is expected to impact different regions in phases, as upper regions such as Gilgit-Baltistan, Kashmir, and upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa are expected to receive rain, wind, and thunderstorms with light to moderate snowfall between January 16 and 19. Murree and Galliyat may see light rain and snow between January 18 and 20.

The system will intensify, bringing widespread rain and thunderstorms to Islamabad, the Potohar region, and major divisions across Punjab, including Lahore, Multan, and Faisalabad and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Peshawar, Hazara, and Mardan as well from January 20-23. Intense snowfall is anticipated in Chitral, Dir, Swat, Murree, Galliyat, and the Neelum Valley during this period.

Balochistan — including Quetta, Ziarat, and Gwadar — is expected to see rain and snowfall on January 21 and 22. Coastal and inland Sindh, including Karachi and Hyderabad, may receive rain on January 22 and 23.

Giving details about potential impacts and travel advisory amid the upcoming weather system, the PMD has warned of several significant impacts.

Heavy snowfall may lead to road closures and slippery conditions in mountainous areas such as Naran, Kaghan, Murree, and Quetta. There is an increased risk of landslides and avalanches in the hilly terrains of KP, Gilgit-Baltistan, and Kashmir, the weather advisory department said, adding that daytime temperatures are expected to drop significantly nationwide.

The “wet spell” is likely to diminish the dense fog conditions currently prevailing in Punjab, KP, and upper Sindh.

Tourists and commuters are strongly advised to remain extra cautious and avoid unnecessary travel to hilly areas during the forecast period, the PMD said.

A new round of floods and landslides triggered by torrential rain in central Vietnam since the weekend has killed at least eight people, a government report said on Wednesday, with traders also warning that it could hamper the ongoing coffee harvest.

From Saturday night, rainfall has exceeded 1,100 millimetres in several parts of central Vietnam.

The region is home to a key coffee production belt, as well as the country’s most popular beaches; however, it is highly prone to storms and floods.

The fatalities include six bus passengers killed in a landslide on Sunday evening en route from Da Lat to Nha Trang, the government said in the report.

Seven people remain missing, including three buried under a landslide in Danang.

“Some coffee farms in low-lying areas of Dak Lak are deep in floodwater,” a coffee trader based in the province said.

Heavy rain is continuing there, slowing down the harvest, another Dak Lak-based trader said.

“Farmers in the province have picked 10%-15% of the beans, and they need sunlight to dry them,” the trader added.

Photos published by state media on Wednesday showed homes in several villages in central Vietnam flooded to the roof as stranded residents call for help.

Hundreds of families were evacuated overnight from their flooded homes, according to the Vietnam News Agency.

In nearby Gia Lai province, schools were also forced to close on Wednesday, affecting 26,000 students.

In the UNESCO-listed ancient town of Hoi An, which was still cleaning up the damage done by a previous round of floods two weeks ago, waters are rising again.

Media photos show tourists and residents moving through the streets of Hoi An on boats, passing inundated cafes and centuries-old wooden houses.

The national weather forecast agency warned of more flooding and landslides on Wednesday, with heavy rain set to continue in the region.

Qadirabad headworks under threat amid surging Chenab flow

Updated 28 Aug, 2025 01:17pm 0 min read

The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has warned that the water flow of the Chenab River is continuously increasing at the Qadirabad headworks and has reached 996,000 cusecs against its capacity of 800,000 cusecs.

According to the DG PDMA, there is a risk of a breach on the left bank due to the rising water pressure. If the headworks are breached, areas in Hafizabad and Chiniot will be affected, he added.

The PDMA further stated that instructions have been issued to deputy commissioners to evacuate residents, and teams from the district administration and irrigation department are present on the spot.

Efforts were being made to reinforce and strengthen the embankment, the PDMA added.

Meanwhile, the flood situation in the River Ravi remained critical on Thursday, with the water flow at Shahdara surpassing 190,000 cusecs.

The continuous rise in water levels in rivers in various parts of Punjab has increased the risk of flooding.

According to sources, district administration and rescue teams have been assessing the situation.

The Lahore Commissioner stated that a flow of 200,000 cusecs is expected to pass today.

In Kasur, the water flow has reached 263,000 cusecs, submerging nearby villages and forcing authorities to evacuate residents to safer areas.

At Head Balloki, the River Ravi has reached a high level, while in Shakargarh, several villages have been submerged due to the breach of a protective embankment at Bhiku Chak.

The sources further said that sirens have been sounded to warn citizens, adding that more than 500 families have been relocated to safer areas.

Meanwhile, the water level in the Sutlej River has also started rising at Lodhran.

The flood situation near Chiniot has worsened to a dangerous level, prompting authorities to launch efforts to protect the historic bridge in the city. The administration has completed preparations for a potential embankment breach.

More than 10 lakh cusecs of water are passing through Head Khanki, while water has entered the residential areas of Wazirabad.

In addition, standing crops in Mandi Bahauddin and Gujranwala have been submerged in floodwater. All civil institutions, including the Pakistan Army, are on high alert.

Fresh rains break sweltering heat spell in Karachi

Published 16 Jun, 2025 07:46pm 0 min read

Parts of Karachi received moderate rains on Monday after days of extreme heat and humidity, bringing a welcome change in the weather.

Rain was reported in Gadap, Kathore, Northern Bypass, and surrounding localities, while light drizzle occurred in Super Highway, Malir, Memon Goth, and Malir Cantt, helping to break the intensity of the heat. However, the humidity in the city persisted despite the rain.

Elsewhere in the country, weather conditions varied with reports of rain, thunderstorms, and even hailstorms in some regions.

The upper parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa were particularly expected to receive heavy rain.

In Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan, rainfall brought temporary relief from scorching temperatures. However, strong winds and rain caused disruptions in the power supply due to feeder trips in multiple areas.

In cities such as Sahiwal, Vehari, Arifwala, Sheikhupura, and surrounding regions, rain significantly reduced the heat, but also led to widespread electricity outages due to the power infrastructure being affected.

In Balochistan’s Loralai district and its surrounding areas, thunderstorms and rain helped cool down the weather.

Meanwhile, in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Swat, Mingora, Malam Jabba, Kalam, and other regions, strong winds followed by rain turned the weather pleasant.

Rainfall has provided much-needed relief from the ongoing heatwave, allowing residents of Punjab, Sindh, Balochistan, Kashmir and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa to enjoy a more pleasant atmosphere.

While some areas experienced heavy downpours, others saw light drizzles that improved the weather significantly.

This resulted in a substantial decrease in temperature, alleviating the intense heat experienced in recent days.

Karachi also benefited, with areas like Sohrab Goth, Gulshan-e-Mimar, Surjani Town, Baldia, Orangi, and Gulshan-e-Iqbal receiving rain and drizzle. Strong winds helped improve the muggy conditions, allowing residents to take advantage of the refreshing weather.

In Sindh, light rain received in interior regions such as Ubauro, Dharki, and Naushero Feroze added to the pleasantness, while Dera Murad Jamali in Balochistan enjoyed a similar transformation thanks to the rain.
