Renowned mountaineer Sohail Sakhi, who died in an avalanche on Broad Peak, was laid to rest in his native Hunza on Sunday, with a large number of people attending his funeral.

Sakhi was among 10 Pakistani and foreign mountaineers who went missing after an avalanche struck near Camp II during a Broad Peak expedition on July 30.

Sakhi’s body was brought to Hunza in a procession comprising dozens of vehicles and motorcycles and taken to the Aliabad ground, where his funeral prayers were offered.

A large number of people, including representatives of the provincial government, district administration and various organisations, attended the funeral and paid tribute to the deceased mountaineer.

Representatives of the provincial government, public organisations and elected representatives also laid floral wreaths at the funeral.

Sakhi was later buried at his ancestral graveyard, where residents of Hunza bid farewell to the mountaineer with tearful eyes.
