Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Tuesday urged Iran and the United States to return to negotiations as he met Iranian Interior Minister Eskandar Momeni, who delivered a special message from Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian during talks in Islamabad.

According to sources, Momeni briefed the prime minister on the reasons behind the recent escalation between Iran and the United States and conveyed the Iranian president’s message during the meeting at the Prime Minister’s House.

The Iranian minister also appreciated Pakistan’s efforts to facilitate dialogue between Tehran and Washington, the sources said.

Expressing concern over rising tensions between Iran and the US, PM Shehbaz stressed the need for both sides to resume negotiations to prevent further escalation.

The prime minister also reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to strengthening its longstanding relations with Iran. Both sides agreed to maintain close coordination and continue high-level engagement on issues of mutual interest.

Momeni arrived in Pakistan on an official visit on Monday night and was received by Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi at Islamabad International Airport. He is accompanied by a high-level delegation.

Earlier on Tuesday, the Iranian interior minister visited the Pakistan Monument in Islamabad, where he was accompanied by Minister of State for Interior Talal Chaudhry.

A contingent of the Federal Constabulary presented a guard of honour to the visiting dignitary. Momeni laid a floral wreath at the Martyrs’ Monument, offered Fateha for the departed souls and paid tribute to Pakistan’s martyrs for their sacrifices.

He also viewed Islamabad and the Margalla Hills from Shakarparian.

According to sources, Momeni is also scheduled to meet Chief of Army Staff and Chief of Defence Forces Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir later in the day to discuss matters of mutual interest.
