Pakistan is facing a worsening crisis as prolonged electricity outages are now being compounded by widespread internet disruptions, particularly during evening hours.
Consumers report that internet services deteriorate significantly after 5.00 p.m., with both mobile data and call signals severely affected. Users say mobile towers begin to lose connectivity as soon as power outages occur, leading to frequent signal drops.
A spokesperson attributed the disruption to ongoing repairs of a submarine cable, stating that the work is expected to be completed by April 20.
Authorities said services would return to normal once the repair process is finished.
The connectivity issues come amid an escalating power crisis, with electricity shortfall reaching around 6,500 megawatts.
Demand has surged to approximately 22,000MW, while generation stands near 15,400MW.
The gap has led to extended load-shedding across urban and rural areas, with outages in some regions lasting up to 16 hours, far exceeding official schedules.
Officials say hydropower is contributing around 1,500MW, thermal sources about 9,250MW, wind 1,200MW, solar 400MW, bagasse 200MW, and nuclear energy roughly 2,850MW.
Authorities maintain that load management of two to two-and-a-half hours is being scheduled between 5.00 p.m., and 1.00 a.m., to reduce reliance on expensive fuel. However, consumers report much longer and often unannounced outages, disrupting daily life and economic activity.
