At least three police personnel were martyred and four others injured after unidentified gunmen ambushed a police vehicle in Thor, Diamer, officials said on Monday.
The attack occurred as the police team was returning from an operation to destroy poppy cultivation in the area, according to officials.
Caretaker Home Minister Sajid Baig said the assailants opened indiscriminate fire on the vehicle, killing three officers on the spot and injuring four others, including a DSP.
The martyred personnel were identified as Maqbool Shah, Hazratullah and Abdul Rahim.
The injured were shifted to hospital, where two are reported to be in critical condition. Authorities have tightened security in the area and launched a search operation, with additional police and law enforcement personnel deployed to the site.
Caretaker Chief Minister Justice (R) Yar Muhammad strongly condemned the attack, vowing that those responsible would be brought to justice.
He termed the incident part of a “malicious agenda” and said it would not be allowed to succeed under any circumstances.
The chief minister also sought a detailed report from the provincial home secretary and directed health authorities to ensure the best possible medical treatment for the injured personnel.
He paid tribute to the fallen officers and offered prayers for the elevation of their ranks.
