A huge commotion broke out during a Karachi City Council meeting on Friday, where members of the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) and Jamaat-e-Islami clashed, throwing chairs and exchanging kicks and punches.

The confrontation escalated inside the council hall, where chairs were thrown in a circle and fighting broke out among members, turning the session into what appeared to be a battlefield.

The clash began when PPP members sat on chairs, after which Jamaat-e-Islami members raised slogans.

The situation quickly deteriorated as members from both sides kicked, punched and threw chairs at each other.

When Najmi Alam came to give a speech, the house became a “fish market,” and some members got into a fight.

Karachi Mayor Murtaza Wahab later adjourned the meeting indefinitely, saying at a press conference that the atmosphere had been spoiled due to some Jamaat-e-Islami members. He said Jamaat-e-Islami’s double standards could not continue and added that he was the mayor of the city and accountable to the council.

In response, Opposition Leader Saifuddin Advocate said at a press conference that PPP members came with the intention of hooliganism.

He said the same people were also involved in corruption in the city and were creating problems in the house, adding that their members made provocative speeches at the behest of the mayor.

Despite the disruption, 13 resolutions were unanimously approved in the turbulent meeting of the Karachi Metropolitan Municipality council.
