KP to press its case at NFC award on December 4, says Meena Khan

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) will present its case at the National Finance Commission (NFC) meeting on December 4, Provincial Local Government Minister Meena Khan Afridi said on Monday, stressing that the province’s share must reflect the merger of the former FATA region.

Speaking at a joint press conference with government and opposition lawmakers, Afridi said Article 160 of the Constitution clearly refers to “provinces,” and KP now includes the merged tribal districts.

“Our share was 14.2 per cent. After the FATA merger, it becomes 19.4 per cent,” he said.

Afridi demanded immediate payment of the province’s outstanding dues, including Rs2,500 billion in net hydel profit allegedly pending with the federal government.

He said terrorism had severely damaged infrastructure in the merged districts, making timely fiscal support essential.

“We discussed the NFC award in universities and colleges today as well. We will take up the issue with the federal government and other provinces,” he added.

Information Adviser Shafi Jan, PPP Parliamentary Leader Ahmed Kundi, PML-N’s Sardar Shah Jehan and ANP’s Arbab Usman also addressed the press conference, presenting a rare show of unity across party lines.

Kundi said the parties would meet before December 4 and lobby with all provinces and the centre.

“Our stance on resource distribution is clear,” he said.

ANP’s Arbab Usman said his party stood with the provincial government on KP’s rights.

“We demand more than our fair share because of the challenges the province faces. We are united on this,” he said.

PML-N MPA Sardar Shah Jehan said funds for the merged districts had not been released after the merger.

“Our party stands with the KP government on the NFC issue,” he added.

The leaders stressed that KP’s financial claims must be addressed in the upcoming NFC deliberations to ensure equitable resource distribution and support development in the merged districts.
