Punjab has decided to ban the production of petrol motorcycle-rickshaws as part of a major push to tackle smog.
The decision was taken during a meeting of the provincial anti-smog cabinet committee chaired by Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz on Thursday.
The cabinet also approved a phased plan to gradually end the production of petrol motorcycles across the province. Under the new policy, government departments will only purchase electric or hybrid vehicles.
Another key measure includes a complete ban on washing vehicles at home using water, a step aimed at conserving resources amid rising pollution levels.
Officials further agreed to introduce colour-coded waste bins across Punjab, aligning with international practices and improving waste segregation.
The chief minister directed relevant departments to ensure strict implementation of all decisions, saying the shift toward cleaner transport and better waste management is essential for reducing smog and protecting public health.
## PDMA issues smog alert
Meanwhile, the Punjab Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) issued a province-wide alert as dense fog and worsening smog threaten major urban and rural areas.
According to the PDMA, severe fog and smog are expected across the plains, including Lahore, Gujranwala, Sheikhupura, Kasur, Nankana Sahib, Faisalabad, Jhang, Toba Tek Singh, Sahiwal, Layyah, Kot Addu, Multan, Bahawalpur, Rahim Yar Khan, and Khanpur.
The PDMA warned that smog can trigger respiratory illnesses and other health problems, particularly affecting children and the elderly.
