The water crisis in Punjab has reached alarming levels, prompting the Punjab Assembly to seek support from the Secretary of IRSA and the Federal Secretary for Water.
In response to the ongoing situation, a special committee on water governance convened a meeting today to address the crisis.
Key officials, including the Secretary of IRSA, the Federal Secretary for Water, and the Secretary of Irrigation, are set to participate in the discussions.
The committee will evaluate the shortage of water affecting agriculture, industry, and domestic use, as well as examine the impacts of the Cholistan Canal project.
Members of the Punjab Assembly have unanimously acknowledged the necessity of constructing new canals to support agricultural development. Ghulam Muhammad Lali highlighted that existing canals currently function for 15 days, followed by a 15-day closure.
Another member of the Punjab Assembly, Rana Iqbal, emphasized that Pakistan is grappling with challenges resulting from a rapidly growing population, while Javed Niaz Manjh noted that significant decisions regarding the water issue have been lacking in the past.
