Police warn of terrorist activity through food, courier riders during IDEAS

The Karachi Police issued a ‘threat alert’ on Thursday and warned that the vicinity and the adjacent area of the Expo Centre was ‘more vulnerable’ as the convention centre hosts the International Defence Exhibition and Seminar (IDEAS) 2024.

“Reportedly HIA may carry out any terrorist activity by using food panda and courier riders,” a letter from the deputy superintendent of police to the additional inspector general of police said on Thursday.

The 12th IDEAS 2024 opened at the Karachi Expo Centre on Tuesday. The event would run until Friday (tomorrow). The mega-regional exhibition has drawn over 350 high-level delegations from 55 countries, along with numerous trade visitors.

Karachi Expo Centre has been booked to its full capacity with more than 560 defence equipment exhibitors from 41 countries participating including exhibitors from Turkey, China, Iran, the UK, North America, South America, Europe, Asia and the Far East out of which 55% are international and 45% local.

On Wednesday, Chief of Army Staff General Syed Asim Munir attended the event.

“The vicinity and adjacent area of the Expo Centre is more vulnerable,” the letter said and advised police to ensure “strict search of stuff carrying by foods and couriers delivery riders, carefully and enhance vigilance of the area to avert any untoward incident.”
