Islamabad police have requested a large-scale deployment of anti-riot gear, including thousands of tear gas canisters and rubber bullets, from the government in preparation for a planned Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) protest on November 24.
This request comes as the capital administration extended Section 144, banning political or religious gatherings for 10 days, for another two months.
While reports suggest ongoing back-channel talks between the government and the PTI to avert the protest, the police are preparing for the worst-case scenario. According to media reports, police officials have requested 22,000 security personnel and 1,200 containers to counter the protest. The deployment will require substantial funding for food and transportation for both local and incoming security forces.
The police’s request includes 40,000 tear gas canisters (both short and long-range), 50,000 rubber bullets, and 2,500 firearms. They have also requested 5,000 anti-riot kits to bolster the anti-riot unit. The requested personnel include 22,000 officers from Punjab and Sindh police, along with the Frontier Constabulary and Rangers.

Officials stated that preparations are underway to ensure law and order and protect public and private property, given the PTI’s plans for an indefinite protest and sit-in.
Sources indicate that several security plans are under consideration and being shared with relevant authorities for approval. One plan under review involves sealing off an expanded high-security zone encompassing Third Avenue, Faisal Avenue, Margalla Road, and Jinnah Avenue.
