New ISI chief Lt Gen Muhammad Asim Malik takes charge

Lieutenant General Muhammad Asim Malik has officially assumed the position of director general of the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI), marking a crucial shift in the strategic direction of Pakistan’s intelligence landscape, The Express Tribune reported.

Last week, he was appointed as the ISI DG.

Recognised as one of the “most capable operational commanders” in the Pakistan Army, Lt Gen Malik is known for his ability to navigate complex missions with timely and effective actions. His extensive experience in operational intelligence has equipped him to handle various military affairs.

Prior to his current appointment, General Malik led the Infantry Division in Balochistan and commanded the Infantry Brigade in Waziristan. He is a recipient of the prestigious Sword of Honour and has served as Chief Instructor at the National Defence University as well as an instructor at the Command and Staff College in Quetta.

According to the report, Malik is a distinguished graduate of Fort Leavenworth and the Royal College of Defence Studies. He has previously served in key positions within the Military Operations Directorate.

His tenure as adjutant general coincided with pivotal political events, including the arrest of former prime minister Imran Khan.

Founded in 1948, the ISI is Pakistan’s prime intelligence agency.
