Artist Mansoor Rahi’s wife accuses son of stealing paintings worth over Rs1b

The wife of renowned Pakistani artist Mansoor Ahmed Rahi has filed a first information report, accusing their son of stealing her husband’s paintings valued at over Rs1 billion, which allegedly contributed to his death, police reported on Friday.

The complaint was lodged with the Shalimar police on Thursday, nearly eight months after the theft took place.

The police have registered a case against the artist’s son and his associates under Section 380 (Theft in dwelling house, etc) of the Pakistan Penal Code.

According to the FIR, in January, the couple’s son and six of his friends visited their home in Sector F-11. Afterward, the son took his parents out for dinner, leaving his friends in the house, where the alleged theft occurred.

Upon returning home, the son led his parents to an upstairs room. But Rahi heard “strange noises coming from the basement” and, upon asking about them, her son dismissed her concerns. Investigating further, she discovered 70 to 80 of her husband’s paintings had been removed from their frames and rolled up in seven to eight bundles.

The son and his friends allegedly loaded the valuable artwork into a vehicle right in front of her. The paintings, valued at around Rs1 billion, left Rahi in shock, causing him to fall ill after learning of his son’s actions.

Despite multiple attempts to retrieve the stolen paintings, the couple was unsuccessful. Rahi passed away on May 12, leaving Rahi devastated by both her husband’s death and the loss of his artwork.
