Sindh govt releases massive sum for repairing roads in Karachi

The Sindh government has approved the release of Rs1.5 billion for the construction and repair of roads damaged by recent rains in Karachi.

A meeting regarding the repair of rain-affected roads in Karachi was held under the chairmanship of Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah. The meeting was attended by Karachi Mayor Murtaza Wahab, Provincial Minister for Planning and Development Nasir Shah, Minister for Local Government Saeed Ghani, and other officials including the Chief Secretary.

According to the Chief Minister’s spokesperson, the meeting approved Rs1.5 billion for the repair of roads damaged during the recent rains in Karachi.

During the meeting, Minister for Local Government Saeed Ghani informed the Chief Minister that patch work is required on roads in 7 districts of Karachi division, all of which have been damaged by the rains.

Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah stated that the Sindh government had carried out repair and construction work on all roads after the 2022 rains. He added that the Sindh government continues to provide funds for the repair and maintenance of roads to the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) and the Karachi Development Authority (KDA).

Provincial Minister for Local Government Saeed Ghani said that they are conducting a survey of Karachi roads to determine when each road was damaged.

The Chief Minister instructed officials to investigate any roads that have deteriorated prematurely after repair or construction. He emphasized that the investigation should determine who constructed the road and why it failed. He also stressed the need for strict action against those responsible for substandard work. He expressed his desire for all road repair and construction work to be of the highest quality.

Murad Ali Shah instructed KMC officials to ensure that drainage systems are built along with any new roads. He also emphasized the need for service lines along each road. He highlighted the need for repair and construction of flyovers and bridges in South, East, Central, West, Korangi, and Malir districts.

Karachi Mayor Murtaza Wahab stated that Rs1.5 billion are required for the repair and construction of all these projects. In response, Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah urged the KMC to begin work immediately for the betterment of the city of Karachi.
