Chief Justice of Pakistan Justice Qazi Faez Isa has categorically denied any intention of seeking an extension in his tenure.
Addressing the media after the full court reference marking the start of the new judicial year, Justice Isa responded to a question regarding a statement by Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah, who had suggested that all judges should be granted extensions.
CJP Isa challenged Sanaullah to bring him before him and discuss the matter.
He clarified that the issue of extensions was discussed in a meeting with Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar, which was also attended by Justice Mansoor Ali Shah and the Attorney General, but not by Rana Sanaullah.
CJP Isa further revealed that during the meeting, the law minister had mentioned that several Chief Justices were seeking extensions. To this, Justice Isa stated that he would not accept an extension, even if others were granted one.
He added that he was unsure about his own future, saying, “I don’t even know if I will be alive tomorrow.”
