Canadian hammer thrower Ethan Katzberg has captured the gold medal at the 2024 Olympics in Paris. Katzberg’s dominant performance has left spectators, fellow athletes, and social media users in awe, with some even questioning the legitimacy of his achievement.
The 22-year-old native of Nanaimo, British Columbia, made history by becoming the first Canadian to win gold in the hammer throw event since 1956. His opening throw of 84.12 metres set the tone for the competition, as no other athlete could come close to matching his impressive results.
Katzberg’s victory marks a significant milestone for Canadian athletics, as the country has only medaled in the hammer throw event on two previous occasions, with a silver medal in 1912 and a bronze in 1908.
The young Canadian’s dominance has not gone unnoticed, with some international competitors, particularly from Australia and Germany, calling for a “DNA test” to verify the legitimacy of his performance.
Katzberg was quick to credit his longtime coach, Dylan Armstrong, for his success.

“I gotta give a lot of thanks to my prep man over there, Dylan Armstrong,” Katzberg said after the event. “He got me ready for this and we prepared for this for a whole year. It was the only thing we were thinking about and to be able to throw 84 and bring home the gold, that felt really good.”
While Katzberg’s athletic performance was undoubtedly the main attraction, the young Canadian’s impressive moustache and hairstyle also captured the attention of spectators and social media users alike.
Some even compared him with Marvel character Thor.
