Work permit laws introduce new pitfalls for foreign workers in UAE

United Arab Emirates has set up strict laws regarding the employment of domestic workers. If you need to send your maid back home or are unsatisfied with their services, there is a process to cancel their work permit.

According to the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (MOHRE), a fine between Dh50,000 and Dh200,000 will be imposed on anyone who employs a maid without a valid work permit and residency visa.

The same penalty applies to individuals who use a maid’s work permit for purposes other than domestic work.

To cancel a maid’s work permit, residents can visit the MOHRE website and submit a request through the available service channels. They will need to select the reason for cancellation and pay the required fees.

The application will then undergo verification, and the employer will be notified of the approval or rejection via text message and email.
