The Gujarat High Court has halted the release of Aamir Khan’s son, Junaid Khan movie, Maharaj, release after a Hindu group claimed that the movie would incite violence against Hindu sect followers.
The petition alleged that the film, which appears to be based on the historical Maharaj Libel Case of 1862, is likely to adversely impact public order and incite violence against the followers of the Vallabhacharya sect as well as the Hindu religion in general.
The Maharaj Libel Case of 1862 was sparked by allegations of misconduct against a prominent individual. The case was decided by the English judges of the Supreme Court of Bombay.
The court’s ruling was seen as highly critical and disrespectful towards the Hindu religion, making “seriously blasphemous comments” about the deity Lord Krishna, as well as devotional songs and hymns.
Justice Sangeeta Vishen of the Gujarat High Court has considered the arguments made by the Pustimargis (a group) and has issued an interim order prohibiting the release of a certain movie in any form. The case is now set to be heard further by the court on June 18.
Meanwhile, the movie has been trending on social media platform, X, urging ‘Boycott Netflix’ and ‘Ban Maharaj’ for some time now.
One person wrote, “Why was religion introduced into a film made on food a few months ago ?? And now the insult to Hindu saints, how long will this continue? (sic)” The same message was shared by many others as well.
