T20 World Cup: Shoaib Malik joins sports stars for first look at USA stadium

The ambassador for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024, Usain Bolt, along with Pakistani cricketer Shoaib Malik and several other renowned cricketers, saw the first glimpse of the Nassau County International Cricket Stadium from premium seats, according to the the International Cricket Council.. 

They were joined by Corey Anderson and Monank Patel from the USA cricket team, cricket legend Sir Curtly Ambrose from the West Indies, Liam Plunkett from England, John Starks from the NBA’s New York Knicks, Elena Delle Donne from the WNBA’s USA team, Bartolo Colon from the MLB’s New York Yankees-Mets, Victor Cruz from the NFL’s New York Giants, and Ibtihaj Muhammad from fencing, representing the USA.

The occasion was inaugurated by all the stars autographing a cricket bat, which will be displayed at the venue throughout the eight matches of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024, scheduled from June 3rd to June 12th.

Bolt expressed confidence that the venue would offer an exhilarating cricket experience, expressing that the show’s hosting as an event in the USA is a significant milestone and could pave the way for cricket’s inclusion in the 2028 LA Olympics.

The ICC took to Instagram on Wednesday, captioning, “Usain Bolt and stars across the world welcome you to New York for the #T20WorldCup.”

He praised its design, stating that it provides an excellent vantage point for spectators.

The inaugural ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 in New York will have an opening match between Sri Lanka and South Africa taking place at the Nassau County International Cricket Stadium on June 3rd.

The CEO of T20 USA Inc, Brett Jones regarded the event as a befitting welcome to cricket in the USA.

“Having Curtley Ambrose, Liam Plunkett, Shoaib Malik, Corey Anderson and Monak Patel here and seeing their response to the stadium and the playing surface was also pretty special. It gives us a real sense of what the fans can expect next month,” he said.

The temporary stadium has a seating capacity of 34,000, is the first of its kind in international cricket, and is the largest ever constructed in the United States.
