The Election Commission of Pakistan has issued the list of the lawmakers who are suspended following the Supreme Court decision on the Sunni Ittehad Council (SIC) plea, seeking reserved seats for women and minorities.
“The question of allocation of reserved seats in the national and provincial assemblies touches upon the foundational constitutional concept of a parliamentary democracy that the voice of the electorate is truly reflected in the composition of the assemblies,” said the apex court order dictated by the presiding judge of the three-member bench Justice Syed Mansoor Ali Shah.
There are as many as 77 lawmakers, according to the three-page notification issued by the Election Commission of Pakistan on Monday.
The country’s top electoral authority suspended three Sindh MPAs after the apex court’s decision. Last week, the Punjab Assembly speaker took a similar decision.
