Egg prices soar to highest level

As Karachi is experiencing coldest days of the year, the per dozen eggs cost has increased by Rs13 this week.

A single egg now cost Rs40 in the city.

Talking to Aaj News, consumers termed the peak as the failure of government’s price control mechanisms.

Retailers blamed the situation on expensive feed of chicken and skyrocketing wholesale rates.

Egg prices in Karachi hover at around Rs400 per dozen from Rs280-300 until a few months ago. Retailers said that they are purchasing eggs at high prices from the wholesalers who in turn blamed it on feed prices.

Since the price went up, a large number of families are buying limited numbers of eggs instead of a dozen.

The cost of cheaper anda and paratha breakfast at local restaurants has also increased making it unaffordable for many.
