The Lahore traffic police on Sunday took into custody an underage driver who allegedly killed six members of a family in a road accident in Lahore.
A day earlier, rescue officials said that at least six people, who belonged to the same family, were killed in a road accident in Defence Phase 7 of Lahore.
The Lahore traffic police said that an underage driver killed six members of a family in a road accident in Defence Phase 7 last night.
“While are doing out efforts to curb underage driving; we urge parents to act responsibly and don’t allow your kids to drive vehicles,” the Lahore traffic police wrote in a post on X.
The first information report of the accident was filed at Defence police station invoking Section 279 (Rash driving or riding on a public way), Section 322 (Punishment for qatl-bis-sabab), and Section 427 (Mischief causing damage to the amount of fifty rupees) of the Pakistan Penal Code.
According to the report, Rafaqat Ali and his family were returning to their home in two cars after meeting his daughter’s in-laws when a car rammed into one of their cars.
As a result, six members of Ali’s family, including two infants, were injured critically. All the injured were moved to the Lahore General Hospital, however, they died during treatment.
The driver of the overspeeding car was identified as Afnan Shafqat.
Caretaker Punjab Chief Minister Mohsin Naqvi expressed condolences over the deaths and sought a report on the accident.
He also ordered legal action against the negligent driver.
