Pakistan’s courts to hear multiple important cases today

Courts in Pakistan will be in headlines on Monday, with multiple important cases lined up from accountability courts to the Supreme Court.

A special court is hearing the cipher case against Imran Khan and Shah Mahmood Qureshi inside the Adiala Jail, where both could be indicted.

The case, registered under the Official Secrets Act, accuses Imran of divulging contents of a classified cipher and of losing its copy.

A three-member bench of the Supreme Court will take up petitions asking for general elections to be held within the constitutionally mandated 90 days.

Justice Qazi Faez Isa himself leads the bench which includes Justice Aminuddin Khan and Justice Athar Minallah.

Another Supreme Court bench will take up petitions against the trials of civilians involved in the May 9 protests in military courts.

The five-member bench will include Justice Ijaz ul Ahsan, Justice Munib Akhtar, Justice Ayesha Malik, Justice Mazahar Naqvi, and Justice Yahya Afridi.

An accountability court in Islamabad will issue the judgment in a corruption verdict against former Finance Minister Ishaq Dar today. The judgment had been reserved a while back.

Separately, Nawaz Sharif’s lawyers could approach the Islamabad High Court to file an application to clear him of all charges in Al-Aziziya and Avenfield cases.

Nawaz has already obtained protective bail in the cases.
