Teacher warns Indian student against dancing at convocation

An Indian student’s memorable moment was about to become his worst one when teachers refused to award him a degree on convocation day.

Arya Kothari, a student of Narsee Monjee Institute of Management Studies in Mumbai, went to receive his degree while singing and dancing to the Bollywood movie Salaam-e-Ishq’s song Tenu Leke. But the professors did not like it and refused to award the degree.

“We are not going to give you [the degree],” said one of the faculty members when Kothari came. Another member said that it was a “formal function” in which such activities were not allowed.

But the student apologised to the faculty members who warned him against doing such things in future and awarded him the degree. The students in the hall roared after he got the degree.

Many social media users have reacted to the viral video. There are mixed reactions to the post as some believed that there was nothing wrong with such a small act of celebration while some deemed the student’s action unnecessary and added that he should have etiquette.

Another user’s comment shed light on the challenges faced by students, emphasising the “difficulties” they encounter.

“Students completed their course after struggling with their mental health, family issues, personal issues and many other issues. They have a right to celebrate. I can understand why people get frustrated when they see someone happy. Sorry you didn’t get that level of confidence or stage, but let others live their lives without wearing a mask,” wrote one user.
