The Election Commission of Pakistan has summoned PTI Chairman Imran Khan to appear before the commission on August 4 in a notice regarding the conduct of intra party elections.
The ECP stated that PTI may be declared ineligible to obtain or retain poll symbol if its party chairman fails to appear before the electoral body.
“You are required in terms of Section 215(4) of the Elections Act, 2017, to appear before the Election Commission on 4th August, 2023 at 10:00 a.m. at the ECP Secretariat, G-5l2, lslamabad, failing which the Commission under Section 215 (5) of the Elections Act, 2017, may declare your political party ineligible to obtain election symbol for future election(s),” the notice said.
The ECP is empowered to declare a political party ineligible to obtain an election symbol under section 215 of the Election Act.
The PTI has not held the intra party elections since June, 13, 2021 despite availing an extension of one year, the notice stated.
“The intra-party elections of your party are due since 13.06.2021 and despite availing extension of one year w.e.f. 13.06.2021 to 13.06.2022, your party has failed to conduct intra party elections under the party’s constitution till date,” it added.
In June 2022, the election body also referred back the constitution submitted by the PTI citing several deficiencies.
