NEPRA raises price of electricity by Rs1.9

The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority has decided to raise the per unit price of electricity across the country.

The price of electricity will be raised by Rs1.9 per unit for consumers of goverment distribution companies. However, the increase will only be Rs1.44 for consumers of K-Electric.

NEPRA Chairman Tauseef H Farooqi presided over requests regarding the monthly fuel adjustment charges for the month of May on Wednesday. The Central Purchasing Power Agency recommended an increase of Rs2.05 per unit for government operated DISCOS and Rs1.49 for K-Electric. However, NEPRA only approved Rs1.90 and Rs1.44 increase respectively.

The increase will leade to an additional burden of Rs25 billion for consumers across Pakistan of which Rs2 billion will fall on K-Electric consumers.

The chairman criticised the performance of the distribution companies and added that the authority could not provide cheap electricity to consumers despite wanting to.
