Man who attacked Pakistan embassy in Kabul not Afghan national: Taliban

The government of Afghanistan said Monday that it has arrested the alleged attacker responsible for Friday’s attack on the Pakistani embassy in Kabul, and the suspect is a foreign national.

Afghanistan’s Acting Deputy Minister for Information Zabihullah Mujahid said that special forces have arrested a foreign suspect from Kabul who is associated with the Islamic State / Daesh.

The Afghan government spokesperson said that the attack on the Pakistani embassy was a joint operation by the insurgents and ISIS, with the aim to create mistrust between the brotherly countries of Afghanistan and Pakistan. It added that further investigation was underway.

Earlier, the ISIS claimed responsibility for the attack on the Pakistani embassy, with Reuters reporting that the militant group had issued the statement via Telegram.

A gunman had opened fire on the Pakistani embassy in Kabul, while the head of mission was there. A security official was hit by three bullets while keeping the head of mission safe.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif called for an investigation into the ‘assassination attempt’ in his message condemning the attack shortly after it took place.
