Actor Armeena Khan has criticised the way women are treated in the Arab world after three women were killed in three separate countries. The actor’s tweets served to call attention to the three cases which have made waves in the Arab world.
The three women are Egyptian Naira Ashraf, Iman Irshaid and Lubna Mansour.
Naira Ashraf was repeatedly stabbed by a colleague as she got out of a bus at the gates of her university. He then slit her throat. Mohamed Adel was convicted in a historically speedy trial to death by hanging days later.
It appears that Iman Irshaid became the victim of a copycat killing in Jordan days later. She was shot five times at Amman University by a man she had rebuffed.
An engineering graduate from Jordan Lubna Mansour was stabbed to death in Sharjah and her attacker was arrested days later. The three cases have led to an outcry in the Arab world.
Armeena tweeted that, “This is what happens when you allow women to become second class citizens. Beings that men can own, possess and discard at will. This will not do.”
When one Twitter user, Aadil Naeem retorted that Islam gave women rights, Armeena fired back that: “Islam does but Muslim men don’t allow those “rights” to be passed on so women are still without their basic rights. And you only have to look at all the gender-based violence as evidence.”
